THE HOLY QUR'AAN
INTRODUCTION:
This Surah consists of 52 verses, 256 sentences, 1,423 letters and 2 Ruku’s.
It takes its name from the word al-Haaqqah with which it opens.
This too is one of the earliest surahs to be revealed at Makkah. Its subject matter shows that it was sent down at the time when opposition to the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) had started but had not yet become tyrannical. Musnad Ahmad contains a tradition from Hadrat Umar, saying: "Before embracing Islam one day I came out of my house with a view to causing trouble to the Holy Prophet, but he had entered the Masjid al-Haram before me. When I arrived I found that he was reciting surah Al-Haaqqah in the Prayer. I stood behind him and listened. As he recited the Quran I wondered at its literary charm and beauty. Then suddenly an idea came to my mind that he must be a poet as the Quraish alleged. Just at that moment he recited the words: "This is the Word of an honourable Messenger: it is not the word of a poet." I said to myself:
Then, he must be a soothsayer, if not a poet. Thereupon be recited the words:"Nor is it the word of a soothsayer: little it is that you reflect. It is a Revelation from the Lord and Sustainer of the worlds. On hearing this Islam entered deep into my heart." This tradition of Hadrat Umar shows that this surah had been sent down long before his acceptance of Islam, for even after this event he did not believe for a long time, and he continued to be influenced in favour of Islam by different incidents from time to time, till at last in the house of his own sister he came by the experience that made him surrender and submit to the Faith completely. The first section (vv. 1-37) is about the Hereafter and the second (vv. 38-52) about the Quran's being a revelation from Allah and the Holy Prophet's being a true Messenger of Allah. The first section opens with the assertion that the coming of the Resurrection and the occurrence of the Hereafter is a truth which has to take place inevitably. Then in vv. 4-12, it has been stated that the communities that denied the Hereafter in the past became worthy of Allah's scourge ultimately. In vv. 13-17 the occurrence of Resurrection has heen depicted. In vv. 18-37 the real object for which Allah has destined a second life for mankind after the present worldly life has been enunciated. In it we are told that on that Day all men shall appear in the Court of their Lord, where no secret of theirs shall remain hidden; each man's record will be placed in his hand. Those who had spent lives in the world with the realization that one day they would have to render an account of their deeds before their Lord, and who had worked righteously in the world and provided beforehand for their well being in the Hereafter, will rejoice when they see that they have been acquitted and blessed with the eternal bliss of Paradise. On the contrary, those who neither recognized the rights of Allah, nor discharged the rights of men, will have no one to save them from the punishment of Allah, and they will be cast into Hell.
In the second section (vv. 38-52) the disbelievers of Makkah have been addressed and told: "You think this Quran is the word of a poet or soothsayer, whereas it is a Revelation sent down by Allah, which is being presented by the noble Messengers. The Messenger by himself had no power to increase or decrease a word in it. If he forges something of his own composition into it, We will cut off his neck-vein (or heart-vein). For this is the Truth absolute and pure: and those who give it a lie, will have ultimately to regret and repent.

3. Wama adraka ma alhaqqatu
And what would convey to you what the Reality is?
69 : 4
4. Kaththabat thamoodu waAAadun bialqariAAati
The tribes of Thamud and Aad refuted this grievous inevitability!
69 : 5
5. Faamma thamoodu faohlikoo bialttaghiyati
As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the Lightning;
69 : 6
6. Waamma AAadun faohlikoo bireehin sarsarin AAatiyatin
While as for Aad, they were destroyed the cataclysmic Storm –
69 : 7
7. Sakhkharaha AAalayhim sabAAa layalin wathamaniyata ayyamin husooman fatara alqawma feeha sarAAa kaannahum aAAjazu nakhlin khawiyatun
Which We unleashed upon them full blast for seven successive nights and eight long days so that one would have seen their dead scattered around as if they were hollow trunks of uprooted palm trees!

8. Fahal tara lahum min baqiyatin
Can you see any vestiges of their past existence now?
69 : 9
9. Wajaa firAAawnu waman qablahu waalmu/tafikatu bialkhati-ati
And Pharaoh, and the others before him, and the townships that were toppled, all of whom had erred!
69 : 10
10. FaAAasaw rasoola rabbihim faakhathahum akhthatan rabiyatan
They disobeyed the messengers of their Lord so He grabbed them in an unyielding clasp.
69 : 11
11. Inna lamma tagha almao hamalnakum fee aljariyati
Verily when the deluge inundated, We carried you on board the ship –
69 : 12
12. LinajAAalaha lakum tathkiratan wataAAiyaha othunun waAAiyatun
So that We make it a memorial for you and so that the ears which absorbed the story may remember it for a long time to come!
69 : 13
13. Fa-itha nufikha fee alssoori nafkhatun wahidatun
And when the Trumpet reverberates once, -
69 : 14
14. Wahumilati al-ardu waaljibalu fadukkata dakkatan wahidatan
And the earth together with all its mountains is hoisted up and then crumbled into dust in a single move, -
69 : 15
15. Fayawma-ithin waqaAAati alwaqiAAatu
Then, on that Day, what must befall will befall!
69 : 16
16. Wainshaqqati alssamao fahiya yawma-ithin wahiyatun
And the heaven will rent asunder, for on that Day it will become fragile –
69 : 17
17. Waalmalaku AAala arja-iha wayahmilu AAarsha rabbika fawqahum yawma-ithin thamaniyatun
And the angels will line up on its borders; and the Throne of your Lord will be borne on their shoulders by eight rows of angels!
69 : 18
18. Yawma-ithin tuAAradoona la takhfa minkum khafiyatun
On that Day you will be uncloaked, with no secret of yours a secret anymore!
69 : 19
19. Faamma man ootiya kitabahu biyameenihi fayaqoolu haomu iqraoo kitabiyah
Then, he who has been given the deposition of his deeds in his right hand will say : 'Take this deposition of my deeds and read it!
69 : 20
20. Innee thanantu annee mulaqin hisabiyah
'I was firmly convinced that I would meet up with my reckoning!'
69 : 21
21. Fahuwa fee AAeeshatin radiyatin
So he will be in a state of blissful contentment –
69 : 22
22. Fee jannatin AAaliyatin
Inside a lofty Garden –
69 : 23
23. Qutoofuha daniyatun
Wherein the clusters overhang within easy reach –
69 : 24
24. Kuloo waishraboo hanee-an bima aslaftum fee al-ayyami alkhaliyati
(And it will be said to them) : 'Eat and drink of this sumptuous reward in return for all that which you sent ahead of you in the past days!'
69 : 25
25. Waamma man ootiya kitabahu bishimalihi fayaqoolu ya laytanee lam oota kitabiyah
But he who has been given the deposition of his deeds in the left hand will say : 'How I wish I was not handed this deposition!

26. Walam adri ma hisabiyah
'And I had remained oblivious to my reckoning!
69 : 27
27. Ya laytaha kanati alqadiyatu
'If only my death had settled all my scores!
69 : 28
28. Ma aghna AAannee maliyah
'My possessions have availed me not –
69 : 29
29. Halaka AAannee sultaniyah
'And my strength has dissipated!'
69 : 30
30. Khuthoohu faghulloohu
(It will be said) : 'Grab him and shackle him –
69 : 31
31. Thumma aljaheema salloohu
'And then expose him to the fierce flames of Hell –
69 : 32
32. Thumma fee silsilatin tharAAuha sabAAoona thiraAAan faoslukoohu
'And then thread him through a chain which is seventy cubits long!
69 : 33
33. Innahu kana la yu/minu biAllahi alAAatheemi
'Verily he believed not in Allah, the Almighty –
69 : 34
34. Wala yahuddu AAala taAAami almiskeeni
'Nor encouraged the feeding of destitutes!
69 : 35
35. Falaysa lahu alyawma hahuna hameemun
'So he has no cohorts here this day!
69 : 36
36. Wala taAAamun illa min ghisleenin
'Nor has he any food to eat except excretions –
69 : 37
37. La ya/kuluhu illa alkhati-oona
'Which are consumed by none but the sinners! (R)

69 : 38
38. Fala oqsimu bima tubsiroona
'I swear by all that which you see around you –
69 : 39
39. Wama la tubsiroona
'And by all that which you see not!
69 : 40
40. Innahu laqawlu rasoolin kareemin
That these verily are the words of an exemplary messenger –
69 : 41
41. Wama huwa biqawli shaAAirin qaleelan ma tu/minoona
And not the lyrics of a poet! How shallow are you in your faith!
69 : 42
42. Wala biqawli kahinin qaleelan ma tathakkaroona
Nor the utterances of a soothsayer. How short-lived is your memory!
69 : 43
43. Tanzeelun min rabbi alAAalameena
Revealed by Him who is the Lord of the Worlds!
69 : 44
44. Walaw taqawwala AAalayna baAAda al-aqaweeli
And if he had concocted something and then attributed it to Us, -
69 : 45
45. Laakhathna minhu bialyameeni
We verily would have seized him by the right hand, -
69 : 46
46. Thumma laqataAAna minhu alwateena
And then severed the life bearing artery!
69 : 47
47. Fama minkum min ahadin AAanhu hajizeena
And not one of you could have restrained Us from him.
69 : 48
48. Wa-innahu latathkiratun lilmuttaqeena
And verily this Tractate is an admonition for those who proscribe evil;
69 : 49
49. Wa-inna lanaAAlamu anna minkum mukaththibeena
And verily We are aware that some out of you will repudiate it!
69 : 50
50. Wa-innahu lahasratun AAala alkafireena
And verily it is an anguish for those who disbelieve.
69 : 51
51. Wa-innahu lahaqqu alyaqeeni
Yet verily it is also the incontrovertible Truth!
69 : 52
52. Fasabbih biismi rabbika alAAatheemi
So glorify the name of your Lord Almighty! (R)
MUHSIN:
1. The Reality (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)!
2. What is the Reality?
3. And what will make you know what the Reality is?
4. Thamûd and 'Ad people denied the Qâri'ah [the striking Hour (of Judgement)]!
5. As for Thamûd, they were destroyed by the awful cry!
6. And as for 'Ad, they were destroyed by a furious violent wind;
7. Which Allâh imposed on them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so that you could see men lying overthrown (destroyed), as if they were hollow trunks of date-palms!
8. Do you see any remnants of them?
9. And Fir'aun (Pharaoh), and those before him, and the cities overthrown [the towns of the people of [Lout (Lot)] committed sin,
10. And they disobeyed their Lord's Messenger, so He punished them with a strong punishment.
11. Verily! When the water rose beyond its limits [Nûh's (Noah) Flood], We carried you (mankind) in the floating [ship that was constructed by Nûh (Noah)].
12. That We might make it a remembrance for you, and the keen ear (person) may (hear and) understand it.
13. Then when the Trumpet will be blown with one blowing (the first one),
14. And the earth and the mountains shall be removed from their places, and crushed with a single crushing,
15. Then on that Day shall the (Great) Event befall,
16. And the heaven will split asunder, for that Day it (the heaven will be frail (weak), and torn up,
17. And the angels will be on its sides, and eight angels will, that Day, bear the Throne of your Lord above them.
18. That Day shall you be brought to Judgement, not a secret of you will be hidden.
19. Then as for him who will be given his Record in his right hand will say: "Take, read my Record!
20. "Surely, I did believe that I shall meet my Account!"
21. So he shall be in a life, well-pleasing.
22. In a lofty Paradise,
23. The fruits in bunches whereof will be low and near at hand.
24. Eat and drink at ease for that which you have sent on before you in days past!
25. But as for him who will be given his Record in his left hand, will say: "I wish that I had not been given my Record!
26. "And that I had never known, how my Account is?
27. "I wish, would that it had been my end (death)!
28. "My wealth has not availed me,
29. "My power and arguments (to defend myself) have gone from me!"
30. (It will be said): "Seize him and fetter him,
31. Then throw him in the blazing Fire.
32. "Then fasten him with a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits!"
33. Verily, He used not to believe in Allâh, the Most Great,
34. And urged not on the feeding of AlMiskîn (the poor),[]
35. So no friend has he here this Day,
36. Nor any food except filth from the washing of wounds,
37. None will eat except the Khâti'ûn (sinners, disbelievers, polytheists, etc.).
38. So I swear by whatsoever you see,
39. And by whatsoever you see not,
40. That this is verily the word of an honoured Messenger [i.e. Jibrael (Gabriel) or Muhammad SAW which he has brought from Allâh].
41. It is not the word of a poet, little is that you believe!
42. Nor is it the word of a soothsayer (or a foreteller), little is that you remember!
43. This is the Revelation sent down from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).
44. And if he (Muhammad SAW) had forged a false saying concerning Us (Allâh Ìá ÌáÇáå),
45. We surely should have seized him by his right hand (or with power and might),
46. And then certainly should have cut off his life artery (Aorta),
47. And none of you could withhold Us from (punishing) him.
48. And verily, this Qur'ân is a Reminder for the Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2).
49. And verily, We know that there are some among you that belie (this Qur'ân). [Tafsir At-Tabarî, Vol. 29, Page 68]
50. And indeed it (this Qur'ân) will be an anguish for the disbelievers (on the Day of Resurrection).[]
51. And Verily, it (this Qur'ân) is an absolute truth with certainty[] .
52. So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.[]

will make thee realise what the Sure Reality is?
PICKTHAL: Ah, what
will convey unto thee what the reality is!
SHAKIR: And what would
make you realize what the sure calamity is!

YUSUFALI: The Thamud
and the 'Ad People (branded) as false the Stunning Calamity!
PICKTHAL: (The tribes
of) Thamud and A'ad disbelieved in the judgment to come.
SHAKIR: Samood and Ad
called the striking calamity a lie.

YUSUFALI: But the
Thamud,- they were destroyed by a terrible Storm of thunder and lightning!
PICKTHAL: As for
Thamud, they were destroyed by the lightning.
SHAKIR: Then as to
Samood, they were destroyed by an excessively severe punishment.

YUSUFALI: And the 'Ad,
they were destroyed by a furious Wind, exceedingly violent;
PICKTHAL: And as for
A'ad, they were destroyed by a fierce roaring wind,
SHAKIR: And as to Ad,
they were destroyed by a roaring, violent blast.

YUSUFALI: He made it
rage against them seven nights and eight days in succession: so that thou
couldst see the (whole) people lying prostrate in its (path), as they had been
roots of hollow palm-trees tumbled down!
PICKTHAL: Which He
imposed on them for seven long nights and eight long days so that thou mightest
have seen men lying overthrown, as they were hollow trunks of palm-trees.
SHAKIR: Which He made
to prevail against them for seven nights and eight days unremittingly, so that
you might have seen the people therein prostrate as if they were the trunks of
hollow palms.

YUSUFALI: Then seest
thou any of them left surviving?
PICKTHAL: Canst thou
(O Muhammad) see any remnant of them?
SHAKIR: Do you then
see of them one remaining?

YUSUFALI: And Pharaoh,
and those before him, and the Cities Overthrown, committed habitual Sin.
PICKTHAL: And Pharaoh
and those before him, and the communities that were destroyed, brought error,
SHAKIR: And Firon and
those before him and the overthrown cities continuously committed sins.

YUSUFALI: And
disobeyed (each) the messenger of their Lord; so He punished them with an
abundant Penalty.
PICKTHAL: And they
disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, therefor did He grip them with a
tightening grip.
SHAKIR: And they
disobeyed the Messenger of their Lord, so He punished them with a vehement
punishment.

YUSUFALI: We, when the
water (of Noah's Flood) overflowed beyond its limits, carried you (mankind), in
the floating (Ark),
PICKTHAL: Lo! when the
waters rose, We carried you upon the ship
SHAKIR: Surely We bore
you up in the ship when the water rose high,

YUSUFALI: That We
might make it a Message unto you, and that ears (that should hear the tale and)
retain its memory should bear its (lessons) in remembrance.
PICKTHAL: That We
might make it a memorial for you, and that remembering ears (that heard the
story) might remember.
SHAKIR: So that We may
make it a reminder to you, and that the retaining ear might retain it.

YUSUFALI: Then, when
one blast is sounded on the Trumpet,
PICKTHAL: And when the
trumpet shall sound one blast
SHAKIR: And when the
trumpet is blown with a single blast,

YUSUFALI: And the
earth is moved, and its mountains, and they are crushed to powder at one
stroke,-
PICKTHAL: And the
earth with the mountains shall be lifted up and crushed with one crash,
SHAKIR: And the earth
and the mountains are borne away and crushed with a single crushing.

YUSUFALI: On that Day
shall the (Great) Event come to pass.
PICKTHAL: Then, on
that day will the Event befall.
SHAKIR: On that day
shall the great event come to pass,

YUSUFALI: And the sky
will be rent asunder, for it will that Day be flimsy,
PICKTHAL: And the
heaven will split asunder, for that day it will be frail.
SHAKIR: And the heaven
shall cleave asunder, so that on that day it shall be frail,

YUSUFALI: And the
angels will be on its sides, and eight will, that Day, bear the Throne of thy
Lord above them.
PICKTHAL: And the
angels will be on the sides thereof, and eight will uphold the Throne of thy
Lord that day, above them.
SHAKIR: And the angels
shall be on the sides thereof; and above ) I them eight shall bear on that day
your Lord's power.

YUSUFALI: That Day
shall ye be brought to Judgment: not an act of yours that ye hide will be
hidden.
PICKTHAL: On that day
ye will be exposed; not a secret of you will be hidden.
SHAKIR: On that day
you shall be exposed to view-- no secret of yours shall remain hidden.

YUSUFALI: Then he that
will be given his Record in his right hand will say: "Ah here! Read ye my
Record!
PICKTHAL: Then, as for
him who is given his record in his right hand, he will say: Take, read my book!
SHAKIR: Then as for
him who is given his book in his right hand, he will say: Lo! read my book:

really understand that my Account would (One Day) reach me!"
PICKTHAL: Surely I
knew that I should have to meet my reckoning.
SHAKIR: Surely I knew
that I shall meet my account.

YUSUFALI: And he will
be in a life of Bliss,
PICKTHAL: Then he will
be in blissful state
SHAKIR: So he shall be
in a life of pleasure,

YUSUFALI: In a Garden
on high,
PICKTHAL: In a high
garden
SHAKIR: In a lofty
garden,

YUSUFALI: The Fruits
whereof (will hang in bunches) low and near.
PICKTHAL: Whereof the
clusters are in easy reach.
SHAKIR: The fruits of
which are near at hand:

YUSUFALI: "Eat ye and
drink ye, with full satisfaction; because of the (good) that ye sent before you,
in the days that are gone!"
PICKTHAL: (And it will
be said unto those therein): Eat and drink at ease for that which ye sent on
before you in past days.
SHAKIR: Eat and drink
pleasantly for what you did beforehand in the days gone by.

YUSUFALI: And he that
will be given his Record in his left hand, will say: "Ah! Would that my Record
had not been given to me!
PICKTHAL: But as for
him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say: Oh, would that I had
not been given my book
SHAKIR: And as for him
who is given his book in his left hand he shall say: O would that my book had
never been given me:

had never realised how my account (stood)!
PICKTHAL: And knew not
what my reckoning!
SHAKIR: And I had not
known what my account was:

that (Death) had made an end of me!

that it had been death!
SHAKIR: O would that
it had made an end (of me):

profit to me has been my wealth!
PICKTHAL: My wealth
hath not availed me,
SHAKIR: My wealth has
availed me nothing:

YUSUFALI: "My power
has perished from me!"...
PICKTHAL: My power
hath gone from me.
SHAKIR: My authority
is gone away from me.

YUSUFALI: (The stern
command will say): "Seize ye him, and bind ye him,
PICKTHAL: (It will be
said): Take him and fetter him
SHAKIR: Lay hold on
him, then put a chain on him,

YUSUFALI: "And burn ye
him in the Blazing Fire.
PICKTHAL: And then
expose him to hell-fire
SHAKIR: Then cast him
into the burning fire,

YUSUFALI: "Further,
make him march in a chain, whereof the length is seventy cubits!
PICKTHAL: And then
insert him in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits.
SHAKIR: Then thrust
him into a chain the length of which is seventy cubits.

YUSUFALI: "This was he
that would not believe in Allah Most High.
PICKTHAL: Lo! He used
not to believe in Allah the Tremendous,
SHAKIR: Surely he did
not believe in Allah, the Great,

YUSUFALI: "And would
not encourage the feeding of the indigent!
PICKTHAL: And urged
not on the feeding of the wretched.
SHAKIR: Nor did he
urge the feeding of the poor.

YUSUFALI: "So no
friend hath he here this Day.
PICKTHAL: Therefor
hath he no lover here this day,
SHAKIR: Therefore he
has not here today a true friend,

YUSUFALI: "Nor hath he
any food except the corruption from the washing of wounds,
PICKTHAL: Nor any food
save filth
SHAKIR: Nor any food
except refuse,

YUSUFALI: "Which none
do eat but those in sin."
PICKTHAL: Which none
but sinners eat.
SHAKIR: Which none but
the wrongdoers eat.

YUSUFALI: So I do call
to witness what ye see,
PICKTHAL: But nay! I
swear by all that ye see
SHAKIR: But nay! I
swear by that which you see,

YUSUFALI: And what ye
see not,
PICKTHAL: And all that
ye see not
SHAKIR: And that which
you do not see.

verily the word of an honoured messenger;
PICKTHAL: That it is
indeed the speech of an illustrious messenger.
SHAKIR: Most surely,
it is the Word brought by an honored Messenger,

the word of a poet: little it is ye believe!
PICKTHAL: It is not
poet's speech - little is it that ye believe!
SHAKIR: And it is not
the word of a poet; little is it that you believe;

the word of a soothsayer: little admonition it is ye receive.
PICKTHAL: Nor
diviner's speech - little is it that ye remember!
SHAKIR: Nor the word
of a soothsayer; little is it that you mind.

Message sent down from the Lord of the Worlds.
PICKTHAL: It is a
revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
SHAKIR: It is a
revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

messenger were to invent any sayings in Our name,
PICKTHAL: And if he
had invented false sayings concerning Us,
SHAKIR: And if he had
fabricated against Us some of the sayings,

certainly seize him by his right hand,
PICKTHAL: We assuredly
had taken him by the right hand
SHAKIR: We would
certainly have seized him by the right hand,

should certainly then cut off the artery of his heart:

severed his life-artery,
SHAKIR: Then We would
certainly have cut off his aorta.

YUSUFALI: Nor could
any of you withhold him (from Our wrath).
PICKTHAL: And not one
of you could have held Us off from him.
SHAKIR: And not one of
you could have withheld Us from him.

YUSUFALI: But verily
this is a Message for the Allah-fearing.
PICKTHAL: And lo! it
is a warrant unto those who ward off (evil).
SHAKIR: And most
surely it is a reminder for those who guard (against evil).

certainly know that there are amongst you those that reject (it).
PICKTHAL: And lo! We
know that some among you will deny (it).
SHAKIR: And most
surely We know that some of you are rejecters.

(Revelation) is a cause of sorrow for the Unbelievers.

is indeed an anguish for the disbelievers.

surely it is a great grief to the unbelievers.

it is Truth of assured certainty.

is absolute truth.

surely it is the true certainty

the name of thy Lord Most High.
PICKTHAL: So glorify
the name of thy Tremendous Lord.
